When You Don’t Know – Just Smile and Listen

Welcome to Adjuster’s University weekly series offering free tips and tricks for the independent adjuster. Stick with us over the coming weeks and months for a valuable set of lessons that will help you reach your full potential as an adjuster.

So, you’re an adjuster, which in the eyes of many policyholders and contractors means you are the person who controls the checkbook. People want to be paid properly for their work. Morally, as ethical professionals, we should advocate for that. Unfortunately, sometimes a dishonest policyholder or unscrupulous contractor may prey on you. It could be your smell of inexperience or their outright audacity, but the only thing that’s certain is that it happens.

When presented with information you aren’t sure of, just smile and listen. Over time as a property adjuster, you’ll encounter countless policyholders and contractors claiming something needs to be completely replaced because of this or that, or that a certain material is continued — it’s a certainty. Sometimes they’re right, but sometimes they are not. Whether or not this came from a place of ignorance of immoral intent is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that you did not agree nor disagree with their statements, rather, you just listened. You listened for as long as it took to research it independently and come up with your own conclusion.

It can be a long road paved with hard knocks to become a top insurance adjuster. Luckily, we’re here to help you avoid critical mistakes by offering all the training you need right from the get-go.
