The first stage of beginning a career in insurance is research. Start by looking into the many different types of careers you can build within the insurance sector. Learn as much as you can about the daily responsibilities involved in the jobs you’re interested in.
You can find a lot of information by speaking with people who have experience in insurance and reading through company profiles online. Then, start researching the education and certification requirements of any careers you’re considering.
Think about the future.
As with any career path, forward thinking will put you in the best position for success in the insurance industry. Along with researching entry-level positions and the general characteristics, knowledge, and skills necessary to thrive, start imagining what you want your future to be in insurance. Do you want the consistency, predictability, and balance of working a nine-to-five each day? Or are you willing to make some sacrifices to increase your earning potential by running your own business?
Thinking about this early on is key because it will influence how much you learn from others around you and how you approach problems from here on out. For example, if you own an insurance agency someday and begin hiring employees, how will you keep track of staff hours? Two essential documents that you’ll need to prepare when hunting for your first insurance job will be your resume and cover letter. Both of these documents should be well-written, well-organized, and tailored specifically to the job you’re applying for. For example, you can take the information you learn from research and highlight certain transferable skills you’ve learned up to this point in your career.

Remember to spend time researching the responsibilities of the various jobs, and regularly think about what your ultimate goal is for your career.
