How Wrong Choices of Food in Fieldwork Can Make You Fat and Sucky at Claims

“Your brain relies on you to provide it with clean fuel. The dirtier the fuel, the less efficient it operates.” Food is an integral part of your health AND your productivity, especially if you are into fieldwork.  When we eat, food is digested and distributed through the bloodstream in the form of glucoseThat’s what powers the brain.

Depending on the type of food you eat, the glucose may be released gradually or all at once. Table sugar, found in sodas and candy, will cause a rapid release and a spike in energy but is followed by what’s known as a ‘sugar crash’ once that glucose is used up. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain rice or dark bread, are on the other end of the spectrum.  Energy from these foods will be released more slowly and cause a steady supply of glucose to your body and, most importantly, to your brain.

Add whole grain food into your diet especially if you do fieldwork

What you eat during the day is, therefore, directly related to your productivity levels. If you eat something with a lot of sugar, that will release glucose quickly, but you’ll only get a half-hour (or less) of attentiveness. Once the glucose depletes, you’ll crash and become unfocused and easily distracted.  On the other hand, eating something healthy will cause glucose to release more slowly. This will give you the energy you need to concentrate longer and stay productive.

Avoid Junk Food at all costs!

When you’re in the field inspecting losses, it may even feel like the more “efficient” decision to buy some delicious, drive-through goodness when you’re hungry.  But make no mistake – you’re still feeding your body garbage.  Your brain relies on you providing it with clean fuel.  The dirtier the fuel, the less efficient it operates.

In the field, choose almost anything except fast food.  Usually, grocery stores will have a buffet-style cafeteria.  My favorite is Whole Foods, but nearly any supermarket will do.  What’s more beneficial is that there’s often a better selection than typical fast-food chains. You can usually pick what you want and pay for it much quicker. Sometimes the cafeteria may even have a lounge with access to WiFi!
