Watch Out, This Law is Why Most Adjusters Stink

“Every project deserves a deadline if you don’t intend to complete it immediately. There are no exceptions.”

Parkinson’s Law states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. In other words, working longer doesn’t necessarily mean you get more done. If you have a whole day to accomplish an assignment, it may be possible to take half that time to finish the task, yet sometimes it takes all day to complete.

If it only takes you five hours to do something, why are you sitting at your desk for seven or eight hours? As humans, we’re wired to save energy. So, it uses distractions to fill that additional time. If something doesn’t need to be finished immediately, the untrained mind looks for distractions to avoid working. That’s why when faced with a deadline, it’s a lot easier to cut all distractions and find the flow easier than if there was more time to complete the job.

We may encounter a large loss that requires several hours to complete.  We upload a status report, giving us usually with ten additional days until our next report.  More times than not, the adjuster will wait until the latter end of that grace period to provide their closing reports.  Technically, staying within timeline requirements, but the assignment is aging much more than it needs to.

Now that you know it’s a real thing and can affect you, your work product, and your bottom line, be on the lookout for it.  When Parkinson’s Law can creep in, knock it out before it even has a chance.
