Conquer the Day with the “1 and 2 Coffee Rule”

“If it’s not important enough to remember during your morning cup of coffee, it’s not important enough for your time.”

Narrowing down your daily goals helps define what the most important tasks are for the day.  In the morning, ask yourself what the top three things you need to accomplish for the day are.  These top three priorities should come to you pretty quickly because they should be at the forefront of your mind.

I created something called the ‘one and two coffee rule’.

1 and 2 coffee rule

I always make sure I’m awake with enough time to sit, drink coffee, and plan my day.  I’m capable of reaching my flow-state much easier when I have some sort of direction for the day.  This begins with me deciding on my top priorities.  These top priorities were usually at least somewhat on my mind when I went to bed the night before and have already crossed my mind since I woke up.

I plan every single day for success and productivity!

I write my priorities down while I have my first cup of coffee.  The priorities that make their way to paper during that first cup are my top priorities for the day.  As I drink my second cup, that’s where those other priorities start to show up.  You know, those things that would be nice if you got done but aren’t time-sensitive and could always do tomorrow.  If I’m having a wildly productive day, maybe I’ll get to at least some of them, but if not, it’s no big deal.

Throughout the day, I’ll think of dozens of new tasks to add to the list. However, I’ll try my best not to add anything to them unless it’s something important.  If it’s even mildly important, you’ll remember to add it to the list tomorrow.   If it’s not, you’ll probably just forget because well, it wasn’t important.
